3/25/2023 0 Comments Hilbersheimer highrise city![]() The extreme contrast between Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia is not fortuitous. One is occupied by the senate and the other, inverted and much larger is occupied by the Chamber of Deputies. Here, elevated on the ground plane, are two half spheres. ![]() A monumental axis with open space in the center frames a large elevated platform then we find a ten-meter separation between the office slabs, oriented east-west in alignment with the sun. ![]() Here I am also reminded of Teotihuacán, mixed up with Leonidov’s Dom Narkomtjazjprom 1933 project on Moscow’s Red Square. The infinite expanse of the landscape, and the fluid movement through its highways-overpasses without traffic lights-is interrupted by the repetitive alignment of identical government high-rise slabs reminiscent of Ludwig Hilberseimer’s ideal city projects. Within this horizontality, the monumental government buildings, symbolic of a new country, are modest interruptions in this powerful, almost extraterrestrial, landscape. The result is an empty city built on a “higher plane” from which we feel that we are always looking at the horizon. Its infinite vista-first seen in Vaux le Vicompte and then perfected in Versailles-is superimposed on the universal and abstract space of Mies. Here in Brasilia, this idea is moved forward into a real space and a real city. This emptiness in Brasilia is the clearest example of how the desire for a “tabula rasa” (not as in a blank slate, but as according to the Sanskrit, a plane of essence) as the foundation for a new architecture could only exist on paper. It was Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe’s concept of “universal space” that inspired Niemeyer.

(She quickly noted, “We have not found victims or victims families to be of that same opinion.”) “He made the suggestion it was injurious to the victims and the victims’ families,” Christoffersen said. Even by his standards, his complaints were surreal. Of course, one person strongly objected to its exhibition at the Newseum: Ted Kaczynski. (“We call it an artifact, they might still call it evidence,” she added.) Why? “It is on loan to us from the FBI,” said Christoffersen. Of course, that price didn’t include his notorious 10′ by 12′ cabin. History: Home of the Unabomber.” (They also noted it offered “great fishing and hunting.”) The bizarre fate of his home. Spanning 35,000 words, the Unabomber demanded its publication in exchange for an end to his attacks. (“It didn’t appear to have any rhyme or reason, although to him, I suppose, it did,” Christoffersen said.) It is terrifying to consider how long he might have avoided capture if not for… He even picked his victims at random through library research. The Unabomber also made a point of constructing them from “ scrap” materials, to ensure he left as little forensic evidence as possible. There were few chances to expose him as he so carefully avoided people and kept building increasingly sophisticated bombs. ![]() Living largely in insolation in Montana, Kaczynski was a man off the grid. Kaczynski’s habit of targeting universities and airlines led them to take the “un” and the “a” to come up with “una” which they combined with “bom” from “bombing.” Hence the UNABOM case and the Unabomber as the authorities began to pursue a person with what Christoffersen termed a “hyper-opposition to technology.” The Discovery Channel’s miniseries Manhunt: Unabomber, in which Kaczynski is portrayed by Paul Bettany ( A Beautiful Mind), premieres tonight.Ĭarrie Christoffersen, Curator of Collections for Washington, D.C’s Newseum which has partnered with Discovery, discusses some of the reasons Kaczynski and his attacks on technology still hold our attention after two decades (as well as the Newseum’s truly unique Unabomber artifact and how Kaczynski feels about them having it): (The Unabomber is currently in Colorado’s federal prison known as Supermax, whose inmates have included Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, World Trade Center terrorist Ramzi Yousef and mobster Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano.) In 1998, the domestic terrorist pled guilty to an array of federal charges and was sentenced to life in prison, avoiding the death penalty. 3/24/2023 0 Comments Tower of londonThe Mighty Defensive Additions of Edward I If you want to see the British Crown Jewels (well, replicas of a lot of them), you can visit the Royal Treasury in the modern Tower. Indeed, an odd collection of unfortunate, exotic animals – from great apes to lions – would be held here until the 1800s. This opened a bizarre chapter in Tower of London history as it became, in part, a small zoo. The resident elephant in question was a gift from the King of France (although God only knows how an elephant came to be in France!).įollowing this, Henry moved his collection of exotic pets to the Tower. In 1255, surreally enough, King Henry also built an Elephant House. This model shows the late Medieval appearance of the Tower of London. Each tower enjoyed a great, defensive view – and some had beautiful rooms, too. In 1238, King Henry III added grand towers to the existing curtain walls. These included new fortifications, luxurious lodgings, thick curtain walls, and a moat. Of course, the Tower of London is much more than just the White Tower – although this still exists at the heart of the modern fortress.ĭuring the Medieval period of history, the castle was developed and extended by adding new fortifications around the White Tower. A Mighty Fortress: Tower of London History in Medieval Times The whitewash was chosen to make the castle stand out – a bit like a lighthouse! In doing so, the castle demonstrated the unquestionable might and grandeur of the English king for all to see. As you can see, the White Tower was made of luxurious, carefully worked Caen stone. They were painted this hue in about 1240, and they would have been visible for miles around. The White Tower was so-called because the walls would have been whitewashed. It’s no exaggeration that few in England would have ever have seen a building of such a monstrous size. The castle is a grand, square-based fortress, more than 90ft tall and 120ft wide. The layout of the White Tower is similar to other Norman cases built in southern England – including mighty Rochester, and the Keep at the heart of Dover. During the next fifteen to twenty years, it was rendered in stone. When the White Tower was founded – in late 1066 – it would have been a simple Motte and Bailey castle, made of wood. This was strategic: if attacked, the staircase could be burned to make it hard for invaders to gain entry. Entrance to the White Tower was via a wooden staircase direct to the second floor. The ‘White Tower’ was one of three built within the confines of modern central-London (the other two castles have long disappeared). He was a fearsome military commander, and he knew a surefire way to maintain power – by building castles. William was crowned King of England on 25 December, 1066. The very first part of the Tower of London – the White Tower – was built by William the Conqueror in around 1067. A few companies are already working on Lightpaper implementations, but Smoot wouldn’t name any. The company would rather put the technology to use where it can make a big difference soon everything from illuminating a logo on a mobile phone to providing headlights for a car. Rohinni isn’t interested in the entrenched TV market. ![]() ![]() But nothing viable has come to market, and Lightpaper is much thinner than OLED-which has been able to get TVs down to a fraction of an inch thick-and is lower cost and has a life-span of around 20 years, like LEDs. The promise of thin lighting has been simmering for a while, thanks largely to breakthroughs in OLED technology. When current runs through the diodes, they light up. The tiny diodes are about the size of a red blood cell, and randomly dispersed on the material. That object is then sandwiched between two other layers and sealed. In its current state, Lightpaper is manufactured by mixing ink and tiny LEDs together and printing them out on a conductive layer. “All we know is that we’re trying to unlock the ability to create light.” “With Lightpaper it’s more of a platform of light that we don’t even know how it’s going to be used,” explains Smoot. It’s a kind of stunning proposition that reminds me of the first time I heard about 3-D printing. It’s a way to print lighting and apply it to nearly any surface, in any shape, and for any situation. That’s because Rohinni has developed a form of what it calls Lightpaper. His views and conclusions are not necessarily those of ARCHITECT magazine nor of the American Institute of Architects. But he’s already figuring it out. "Right now we are printing the light, but we are going to be putting that back in the hands of the people."īlaine Brownell, AIA, is a regularly featured columnist whose stories appear on this website each week. What's more, the tools could one day be widely disseminated. "You will be able to design and print own light," Smoot said. Architecturally, the technology could be integrated into wallpaper, ceiling systems, tabletops, and most other surfaces. Given the long service life of LEDs and their relatively low heat generation, the company claims its inexpensively produced Lightpaper would disrupt the market for other illuminating surface technologies, such as OLEDs. "Anywhere there is a light, this could replace that,” he said. The company's chief marketing officer, Nick Smoot, told the Coeur d’Alene Press that luminaires could one day be designed with light-emitting shades, thus eliminating the need for typical lamps. ![]() Rohinni anticipates an expansive collection of applications for its captivating development that includes the construction, automotive, and mobile electronics markets. When a current is delivered to the substrate, the tiny diode particles illuminate the entire surface. The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho–based company has created Lightpaper, which the company claims is the thinnest LED light source yet. The flexible, planar light is created by printing an emulsion composed of LED particles suspended in ink onto a thin, conductive substrate. ![]() As technology startup Rohinni has recently shown, its capacity can be extended further, quite remarkably, to include light. Additive manufacturing has expanded as a fabrication technology to make use of a variety of substances, including metals, ceramics, food, and even organic tissue. 3/24/2023 0 Comments Sherwin williams aloof grayI’m betting it’s green or yellow, because I did some scrolling around on the color wheel and I think that’s what would be opposite of the purple tone that I personally see.
